Bachmann on Employment Troubles

Rep. Michele Bachmann’s bare-bones presidential campaign is getting sloppy.

With fundraising and support lagging — and after the departure of much of her political team — Bachmann has resorted to releasing poorly produced web videos to reach out to the public.

In her latest video, filmed last week after a speech at Liberty University, Bachmann said, “We see that our nation is on the ropes right now — on the ropes economically, with very high employment. Our housing values are down.”

Bachmann adds that “a few weeks ago I started to hear the mantra of ‘Anyone But Obama,’” saying that it is in correct — and that conservatives do not have to settle next year.

The phrase ‘anyone but Obama,’ has frequently been used by former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to avoid commenting on the GOP field while she weighs her own presidential run.

Bachmann on Natural Disasters

The earthquake and hurricane that recently afflicted the Eastern Seaboard are just God’s way of getting tone-deaf politicians to pay attention, Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann explained Sunday while speaking to tea partiers in Florida.

Per the St. Petersburg Times and Politico, Bachmann said, “I don’t know how much God has to do to get the attention of the politicians. We’ve had an earthquake; we’ve had a hurricane. He said, ‘Are you going to start listening to me here?’ Listen to the American people because the American people are roaring right now. They know government is on a morbid obesity diet and we’ve got to rein in the spending.”

In other Bachmann news, an Associated Press article in Monday’s Seattle Post-Intelligencer details her willingness to consider drilling for oil and natural gas in the Florida Everglades.

“Bachmann said the United States needs to tap into all of its energy resources no matter where they exist if it can be done responsibly. … In 2002, the federal government at the urging of Pres. George W. Bush bought back oil and gas drilling rights in the Everglades for $120 million. Bachmann, who wants to get rid of the federal Environmental Protection Agency, said she would rely on experts to determine whether drilling can be done without harming the environment.”

Bachmann and the Soviet Union

Michele Bachmann dropped by “Jay Sekulow Live” today to talk about her win last weekend in the Iowa Straw Poll and her presidential campaign in general.  During the discussion, Bachmann asserted that why the American people are very concerned about the state of the economy, they are concerned about other issues as well like abortion, defending marriage … and the rise of the Soviet Union:

I would say it’s a unified message. It really is about jobs and the economy. That doesn’t mean people haven’t [sic] forgotten about protecting life and marriage and the sanctity of the family. People are very concerned about that as well. But what people recognize is that there’s a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward. And especially with this very bad debt ceiling bill, what we have done is given a favor to President Obama and the first thing he’ll whack is five hundred billion out of the military defense at a time when we’re fighting three wars. People recognize that.

Umm … who exactly are these people who are concerned about the rise of the Soviet Union?  Because last time I checked, it went out of existence two decades ago.

Michele Bachmann and the Dark Side

… According to an account published today by MinnPost, at the 2006 Minnesota Republican nominating convention, Bachmann reportedly got into an altercation with a female Republican activist who had supposedly raised questions about whether Bachmann was fit to be the nominee for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.

According to a reporter who witnessed the incident, Bachmann, who had already locked up the nomination, repeatedly said to the woman “You will pay, you will pay.” The woman grew “increasingly upset at the nonspecific threat and began to weep while still demanding to know how Bachmann was going to make her pay.”

Bachmann to Control US Gas Prices

bachmann on gasoline…Michelle Bachmann cannot control the price of gasoline in the United States.

This shouldn’t really be something that has to be said, given that oil market is global and immensely complex, but Bachmann told a group of prospective South Carolina voters she could determine the price of gas. ”The day that the president became president gasoline was $1.79 a gallon. Look at what it is today,” she said. “Under President Bachmann, you will see gasoline come down below $2 a gallon again. That will happen.”

This ignores the geological and geopolitical realities of the world oil market. It’s just impossible to promise the price of gasoline at some future date several years from now. Well, actually, I shouldn’t say that. Perhaps President Bachmann would institute price controls or spend massive sums to subsidize gasoline in an effort to drive gas prices down. The Chinese kept gasoline prices down for a while with heavy-handed efforts. But it’s hard to see how that squares with her small government posture. (To say nothing about whether that would be a good way to spend public money.)…
